My experiences with Nook vs Kindle.

Yesterday I went looking for an ereader. Trying to read galleys in .pdf form on my 4 inch screen made my eyes bleed. (Adobe Digital Editions won't let you adjust font size AT ALL!) I wanted the Nook Simple Touch, until I got to B&N to try one out. It was too light and small. I felt like the first stiff wind would blow it out of my hands or break if my cat sat on it. Plus I was scared my toddler would figure out how to buy books. He is wicked smart on my Android so it is not a baseless fear. It seemed very simple to use. I just wanted something sturdier. I purchased the Nook 1st Edition thinking it would fit my lifestyle. Though it was not bad it was really not for me. I didn't like how difficult it was to push the page turn buttons, and trying to type on the tiny touch screen was not fun. Luckily for me B&N has an awesome return policy, so this morning I was off again to take it back and pick up a Kindle. Now I will be honest and tell you I bought the less expensive Kindle WiFi with Special Offers. Basically, I paid $25 less and in return I get to have ads as my screen saver and on a tiny sliver of my home page. The bargain hunter in me could not turn this down. It has absolutely no affect while you are reading. It is way lighter than the Nook 1st Ed. but it has the size. That was a big plus. The physical keyboard is nice, and the page turn buttons are so easy! No more "geez I will break my thumb" from this girl. I believe I will be keeping this one. The one thing I think I will miss are the Free Fridays from B&N. For now it will have to be My Kindle for My Escape!

  1. Yay! Congrats on the new e-reader. I have debated upgrading my sony, but it really suits me. It is easy to use with all the books I get in PDF and I can format then however with Calibre. No wifi or book store on my model and it suits me fine. Enjoy it. I love the e-ink. Its very easy on the eyes.

  2. Thanks for this great info. It's not easy deciding on an e-reader with so many to choose from.

  3. @Rebecca, I like the larger screen on these. I really didn't realize how much difference 2 inches would make until I compared them side by side. The Sony Pocket was another I looked at briefly, but it just wasn't quite enough of an upgrade in size to make it worth the money.
@Chris, It isn't easy, and were it not for the fact my ARC's can only be read on certain readers it would have been much more difficult!

  5. Congrats on your new blog and your new e-reader! I want to get one that is back lit, but not sure if there is one that is suitable for me. There are so many options out there. I like to read in the dark with my computer and on my iPhone so I feel like one with a back light is a must.

  6. I have a clip on light for reading in the dark. If you really want to have a color reader don't forget to look into Android tablets. They have faster processors and you can get several different reader apps for them. Kindle, Nook, and Aldiko are all good for Android. Plus, you get all the benefits of a tablet like web surfing, email, and Angry Birds!

  7. *grin* Am I allowed to say 'I toldya so'? =P Still, glad you were willing to try out several and find the one right for you; most people just decide on one based on ads and get it and then are always looking over someone else's shoulder, wondering why they seem to be enjoying their reader =P
Also, yay for the simple-to-use but harder for a toddler to get to bookstore on the Kindle =D
